2005/05/04 - Zap goes my modem

Although everyone gets warned about it no one really appears to take lightning strike seriously. However it does happen. Saturday night brought us a huge thunder storm that rolled around for about an hour. One strike in particular was very close and it must have been the one that fried my modem - see picture.

What you want to notice is the two resistors in the inset. These are the first things a power surge would meet on the way in and as you can see they have taken the brunt of it. No doubt the electronics are also fried although only partially. The modem still works fine, except that it cannot hear the phone line.

Luckily though lightning never strikes twice...
